Artist Profile

Andrea Lauer is an award winning costume designer, stylist and fashion designer. She also has technical expertise in sensors, electronics and material science, that she uses for wearable product design and experiential art installations. Her work, in a variety of mediums (theatre, fashion, music and art), blends technology in unique ways to create unexpected stories, products and experiences. 

Andrea has a MFA in Set and Costume Design from New York University and was awarded a Baryshinkov fellowship to experiment with multimedia theater projects. She is currently a fellow at The Design Lab at UC San Diego, working with Don Norman (IDEO, Apple), to explore the future of human centered design.

MOMATH Robot Swarm

 

Artist Role:  Wearable Sensor Designer

 

The New York City Museum of Mathematics Robot Swarm exhibition opened in 2014. Andrea helped them in the planning, design and execution of the participant wearable sensor. The motion control and positioning systems interact with wearable sensors that activate the robots located beneath the participant's feet in an 11x12 foot ring.

Olympics in London 2012

Artist Role:  Costume Designer

Four locations, forty dancers, and six custom body suit designs - all suspended in the air. The extreme action performances, commissioned by the London 2012 Festival, gave even the world's top athletes something to remember 

Bergdorf Goodman 2013 Holiday Window Launch

Artist Role: Costume Designer

Bergdorf Goodman unveiled their holiday windows with a performance by five acrobatic dancers descending down the facade of the flagship store on Fifth Avenue. The costume design included LED lighting to illuminate the dancers for the crowds on the sidewalks below.

"American Idiot" Broadway Show and Inspired Bloomingdales Windows

A look at how the lights of broadway can impact fashion, art, and retail. From the windows of 5th Avenue to the red carpet, American Idiot spawned a cascade of inspiration for designers, retailers, and even tatoo artists.

Queen of the Night Room

 

Artist Role: Set Design/Wearable

 

Queen of the Night is a decadent fusion of theater, cuisine, circus, and nightlife that welcomes guests into a wholly interactive entertainment experience. Within the knife room, guests place a wired glove on their hand that monitors their heartbeat and then projects the beating heart recordings into the space for an immersive experience.

Human Stomp Box- wifi enabled drum vest

Artist Role: Fashion Designer/Product Designer

The vest has a left and right pad that each make a different drum tone, one bass and one snare. The hand controls the tempo, the information is transmitted wirelessly and then processed into the sound that goes with the song.
